Day sixty-three of tracking my own sleep. Eight and a half hours, fifth night running of what any tracker would call good. And I woke up feeling like I’d barely slept at all.
That’s the bit that actually threw me. Not the tiredness on its own, it was the fact that the hours were right. Same as the night before. Same as the night before that. All logged, all within range. And somehow this one felt completely different.
I’d spent years assuming eight hours was eight hours, wherever it landed in the day. Two hundred and ninety-five nights logged across 2025, one person, properly tracked against food, fasting windows and the rest of it. What actually explained day sixty-three wasn’t the amount of sleep at all. It was something I hadn’t thought to track.

The Night the Numbers Didn’t Match How I Felt
One in the morning to half nine. Eight and a half hours, textbook length, and I spent the whole day walking round in a fog like I’d pulled an all-nighter.
We’re told eight hours is the target. Hit the number, job done. That’s what most sleep trackers reduce the whole thing down to: a single duration figure on a dashboard. And on the surface that’s a completely sensible way to simplify something complicated. Duration is easy to measure. It fits on a watch face.
So I went back through my own log looking for what was different about that night. Not the hours, those were fine, better than fine. It was the clock. Every other good-duration night that month I’d been asleep by eleven, out the door by half seven. This one I’d been up finishing something, lost track of time, and by the time I actually got into bed it was gone midnight.
What Your Body’s Master Clock Actually Runs
There’s a bit of biology here I’d completely missed. Behind your eyes sits a cluster of around twenty thousand neurons called the suprachiasmatic nucleus, the SCN. Dr Michael Breus, a sleep specialist who’s been in this field for years, puts it plainly: that cluster is the master clock. It doesn’t just run sleep. It runs metabolism, hormone release, energy, digestion, the lot, all on a roughly twenty-four hour cycle.
Professor Russell Foster at Oxford, one of the world’s leading circadian scientists, uses an image that stuck with me. Twenty thousand neurons acting as the conductor at the Proms. Every organ in your body is an instrument in the orchestra, taking its cue from that one conductor. Liver, heart, gut, muscle, all playing along to the same beat.
Shift the conductor’s timing, through shift work, jet lag, or just staying up two hours later than usual finishing something, and the conductor’s still there. Still keeping a beat. But the orchestra’s now playing out of time with it. Not catastrophically. You don’t collapse. Just wrong enough that nothing quite lands the way it should.
That’s the fog. That’s day sixty-three.
This isn’t only relevant if you’ve already got a diagnosis stacked against you. It’s a mechanism that runs whether you’ve ever mentioned your sleep to a GP or not. If you’ve ever felt off despite hitting your hours, this is very possibly why.
Why the Same Eight Hours Behaves Differently Depending on the Clock
Here’s where it gets specific, because the clock doesn’t run one process, it runs a rota. Picture your body as a factory with shift workers. The liver, on waste processing, clocks in around two in the morning. Growth hormone, the repair crew, works roughly eleven till three. Cortisol, your morning alarm, rings about six. Melatonin, night security, locks the doors around ten.
Every worker’s got a schedule. Screens at midnight, a late night finishing emails, sleeping at random times, that’s asking the night shift to clock on while the day shift’s still on the floor. Machinery colliding. Orders getting mixed up. The factory’s not on fire. It’s just not running properly. Give it a consistent bedtime and all the shifts run the way they’re meant to.

The timing of the investment is the mechanism, not just the amount. Sleep works the same way. None of this made it into the general advice I’d absorbed over the years, and I don’t think that’s anyone hiding anything. Most consumer sleep trackers are built to measure duration because duration is simple to detect from a wrist. Timing against your own body clock is harder to show on a graph, so it quietly drops out of the conversation. The guidance isn’t wrong about eight hours mattering. It’s just incomplete about when those eight hours need to happen.
What I Actually Changed
If I were starting this again, the one thing I’d have tracked far earlier is bedtime consistency, not hours.
I tried something a few weeks before day sixty-three, day thirteen if memory serves: fifteen minutes outside in the morning, no sunglasses, on the idea that morning light helps set the clock. Didn’t work that particular day, if I’m honest. Still felt rough. But one day proving nothing either way isn’t the same as the idea being wrong, so I kept it going.
This isn’t about adding more discipline to an already full day. It’s about protecting the same sleep window, night after night, even on the messy ones, rather than chasing a bigger total. Same bedtime within about thirty minutes, seven days a week, weekends included. Give it three weeks before judging anything, because a shifted clock doesn’t reset in one night either direction. Six weeks in is a fair point to properly compare how you feel.
If you’re on medication that affects sleep, or you’ve got a diagnosed sleep condition like sleep apnoea or chronic insomnia, this isn’t a bedtime-tweak problem, and I’m not qualified to tell you it is. That needs a GP, possibly a sleep clinic. What I’m describing here is for someone already hitting reasonable hours and still not getting the payoff. That’s a different problem.
