Running on Repairs – Day 2

When Sleep Deprivation Meets Day 2 Hunger

Day two of a fast is rarely delightful. Add six and a half hours of sleep to the mix, and you’re starting the day already behind.

I woke up with those deep, annoying hunger pangs. The kind that make you question all your life choices. My body was screaming for food. My brain was foggy from lack of sleep. And there was this bratty little voice whispering, “Come on, just eat.”

But here’s what happened when I stayed the course.

The Physical Reality: Hunger, Fatigue, and Holding Ground

Physically, I felt hungry. Properly hungry. Not the “oh, I could eat” kind. The relentless, gut-twisting kind that doesn’t shut up.

Sleep-wise, I only managed 6.5 hours. For me, dropping below eight hours is like starting a race with a flat tyre. Everything feels harder. Every temptation louder.

Mood though? Surprisingly steady. Not grumpy. Not euphoric. Just holding ground.

I managed some light movement. Nothing major. A bit of walking, staying connected to my body. And the scales showed 2.5 pounds down. I know it’s mostly water at this point, but I’ll take it.

The Biomarker Shift: GKI 3.0 and Therapeutic Ketosis

This is where it got interesting.

On day one, after 18 hours fasting, my glucose was 93.6 mg/dL. Ketones were 0.5 mmol/L. That gave me a GKI of 10.4 — still in the metabolic baseline zone.

But today, after only 42 hours, things shifted:

  • Glucose dropped to 86.4 mg/dL
  • Ketones jumped to 1.6 mmol/L
  • GKI down to 3.0

That GKI — the glucose ketone index — tells me I’ve entered a deeper therapeutic state of ketosis. Under three is where fat burning and healing mechanisms really kick in. Cellular repair. Reduced inflammation. All that good stuff.

It’s a physiological sign that my body is making the metabolic shift from burning sugar to running on fat.

The Mental Battle: That Bratty Voice Wanting to Quit

Let me be honest. There was this strong, almost bratty urge to quit and just eat.

That voice gets loud around this point. “It’s only been two days. Just stop. Have a sandwich.”

But I reminded myself: it’s only 10 days. I’ve done this before. And every time, the results have been worth it. Physically stronger. Mentally clearer. Healthier.

Day two was not enjoyable. And that’s okay to admit.

Reframing Hard Days as Part of the Process

That desire to quit? It’s part of the journey.

Hearing it and choosing not to follow it — that’s the win.

It’s okay if it’s hard. It’s okay if it’s not fun. What matters is staying connected to why you’re doing this.

This is about real health, not just weight.

🎯 Key Takeaways

  • Day 2 is brutal — Hunger plus sleep deprivation is a tough combo. Expect it.
  • GKI dropped from 10.4 to 3.0 in 42 hours — Therapeutic ketosis kicked in faster than expected.
  • The “bratty voice” is normal — Hearing the urge to quit and choosing not to follow it is the real discipline.
  • Sleep matters more than you think — 6.5 hours made everything harder. If you’re fasting, prioritise rest.

Tip of the Day: The Midday Reset

If you’re fasting and sleep deprived, consider adding a short midday rest. Maybe just 20 minutes. Close your eyes. It won’t replace the hours, but it might help with some of the fatigue.

Think of it like plugging your phone in for a quick top-up. Won’t get you to 100%, but it keeps you functional.

0:07Hey folks, welcome to day two of my

0:09health and fasting journey. Today was

0:12well not delightful. Let’s be honest.

0:14Physically I felt hungry like those deep

0:17annoying hunger pangs that make you

0:19question all of your life choices. On

0:22top of that, I only got about six and a

0:24half hours of sleep, which for me is a

0:27fast track to feeling tired and just a

0:28bit off. And I always struggle when I

0:31drop below eight hours. It’s like

0:32starting the day already behind.

0:35Mood-wise though, surprisingly steady.

0:37Not grumpy, not euphoric, just holding

0:40ground.

0:42What made the day harder? Definitely the

0:44lack of sleep. It’s the kind of fatigue

Biomarkers: GKI 3.0 (what that means)

0:46that makes every temptation louder. I

0:48didn’t face social events or crazy

0:50cravings. Just that relentless hunger

0:52whispering, “Come on, just eat.” But I

0:55did manage a bit of light movement.

0:58Nothing major, but enough to stay in

1:00touch with my body. And hey, scales down

1:02two and a half pounds. I know it’s

1:03mostly water at this point, but I’ll

Why lack of sleep made hunger worse

1:30all. And that’s okay to admit,

1:34little educational thought. I checked my

1:36ketones and glucose today and saw some

1:39quite exciting movement. On day one,

1:42after 18 hours, glucose was at 93.6,

1:46ketones 0.5, giving me a J GKI of 10.4,

The “bratty voice” and how I stayed consistent

2:30Reframing today’s challenge, that desire

2:32to quit is part of the journey. Hearing

2:34it and choosing not to follow it, that’s

2:36the win. So, to my future self and to

2:39anyone else walking this path, it’s okay

2:41if it’s hard. It’s okay if it’s not fun.
