The Day I Almost Quit – Day 3

Day Three Nearly Broke Me — Here’s What Happened

Day three of an extended fast is notorious. Not because your body gives up — but because your mind does. I’ve been there before. I know the pattern. But this time was different. Glucose at 70.2, ketones at 4.1, GKI at 1. The data looked brilliant. My body felt like it’d been hit by a bus.

I came within inches of breaking the fast. Not because I needed food. Because every part of me wanted comfort. A warm meal. A reason to stop. I’d argued with myself a thousand times by lunchtime. But I didn’t quit. And that’s the bit worth sharing.

The Walk That Nearly Ended Everything

Three miles. Jeans and a jumper. No waterproof.

About a mile in, the heavens opened. Not a gentle British drizzle. Sheets of rain. The kind that hits you sideways and leaves your eyes bloodshot from wind and water. I looked like a drowned rat by the end. Soaked through. Exhausted. Hungry as hell.

Classic test-the-soul kind of day.

I could’ve turned back. Could’ve used it as an excuse to eat. “Look at me, I’ve suffered enough.” But I kept walking. Not because I’m heroic. Because I knew if I quit today, I’d regret it tomorrow. And I’ve quit for far less before.

The Thousand Arguments I Had With Myself

Hunger pangs like wild animals. Another broken night of sleep. Bloodshot eyes staring back at me in the mirror.

My brain kept offering me outs:

  • “You’ve already proven you can do this.”
  • “Three days is enough. You don’t need to push it.”
  • “You’re dehydrated. This isn’t safe.”

Every single one sounded reasonable. And that’s the thing about Day 3. Your body’s not failing. Your willpower’s being tested. Hard.

But here’s what I noticed: the arguments got quieter as the day went on. Not because I felt better. Because I’d made a decision. I wasn’t quitting today. End of discussion.

The Data That Kept Me Going

Even when everything felt brutal, the numbers told a different story:

  • Glucose dropped from 86.4 to 70.2 (solid fat-burning range)
  • Ketones rose from 1.6 to 4.1 (therapeutic ketosis territory)
  • GKI hit 1 (deep metabolic state)
  • Weight down another 2.5 pounds (likely water, but still a sign of transition)

Yes, probably dehydrated by nightfall. I noticed it. That matters. Awareness means you can adjust.

And something else: despite feeling wrecked, my body looked a touch better. Tighter. Clearer. Like it was remembering what it’s built for.

What’s Actually Happening to Your Body on Day 3

Here’s the educational bit. By Day 3 of a fast, your body is shifting from glucose to fat for fuel. That’s why ketones jumped and hunger got intense.

Your ghrelin hormones — the “feed me” ones — often spike before they settle. It’s not failure. It’s transition. Your system’s recalibrating.

Think of it like switching gears in a car. There’s a moment of friction, a bit of grinding, before everything smooths out. Day 3 is that grind. Day 4? Usually smoother.

What you’re feeling isn’t weakness. It’s your metabolism doing exactly what it should.

To Anyone Else on Their Day 3

If you quit, don’t beat yourself up. You can always start again.

But also remember this: if you can just make it to Day 3, it really does start getting easier on Day 4. Well, so far it always has for me.

Today wasn’t about perfect behaviour. It was about not quitting when quitting sounded incredibly reasonable. That’s real strength. That’s transformation in motion.

And that morning walking habit I had through the summer? It kicked back in today. Not willpower. Identity. My body remembering what makes it feel alive.

🎯 Key Takeaways

Making it to Day 4 changes everything — The pattern holds. Day 3 tests your resolve. Day 4 rewards it.

Day 3 is the hardest mentally, not physically — Your ghrelin hormones spike before they settle. Hunger gets intense before it quiets.

The data tells a different story than your brain — Glucose 70.2, ketones 4.1, GKI 1. Deep metabolic shift happening even when you feel rough.

0:02Day three of my journey and what a day.

0:04Physically, honestly, it’s been brutal.

0:07Hunger pangs like wild animals. Another

0:10broken night of sleep. And then for the

0:12cherry on top, I went for a three-mile

0:14walk in jeans and a jumper. A mile or so

0:17in, the heavens opened. Not a gentle

0:19drizzle. I mean, sheets of rain. I

0:22looked like I’d wed through a lake, and

0:24my eyes were bloodshot from the rain and

0:27wind hitting them. I looked like a

0:30drowned rat. A classic test the soul

0:32kind of day. Emotionally, I felt

0:34fragile, frustrated, but also quietly

0:37proud. I came so close to breaking the

0:40fast. I would have argued with myself a

0:42thousand times. But I didn’t give in.

Soaked walk in torrential rain (bloodshot eyes, wet jeans)

0:45I’ve ended fast for far less before, but

0:47not today. No part of today felt easy.

0:50No magic support, no kind distractions,

0:53just raw hunger and grit. But I did

0:56manage a few things. That soaked the

0:59skin walk, some light exercise at home,

1:01and lots of black coffee and dash. I do

1:03suspect I ended up dehydrated by

1:05nightfall. But I did notice it, and that

1:08matters. Now, here’s the good bit, the

1:10data. Glucose dropped from 86.4 to 70.2.

Biomarkers: glucose 70.2, ketones 4.1, GKI 1

1:15Ketones rose from 1.6 to 4.1. And GKI

1:19was a solid one. And weight’s down

1:21another 2 and a half pounds. Yes,

1:22probably water, but also a clean sign my

1:24body is switching gears. I noticed

1:27something else, too. Despite the misery,

1:29my body is starting to look a touch

1:31better. And my old morning walking

1:34habit, the one I had through the summer,

1:35kicked back in today. That’s not about

1:38willpower. That’s identity. That’s my

1:40body remembering what makes it feel

1:42alive. To my future self or anyone else

1:45walking this path, if you quit, don’t

1:47beat yourself up. You can always start

The thousand arguments with myself (and why I didn’t quit)

1:50again.

1:51But also remember, if you can just make

1:54it to day three, it really does start

1:57getting easier on day four. Well, so far

2:01it always has for me. Educational

2:03moment. By day three of a fast, your

2:06body is likely shifting from glucose to

2:08fat for fuel. That’s why those ketones

2:11jumped and hunger got intense. Your

2:14ghrelin hormones, the feed me ones, they

2:16often spike before it settles. What

2:19you’re feeling isn’t failure. It’s

What’s happening to your body on Day 3 (ghrelin spike explained)

2:20transition. And that frustration, that’s

2:23just your system recalibrating. Today

2:26wasn’t about perfect behavior. It was

2:28about not quitting when quitting sounded

2:30incredibly reasonable. That’s real

2:33strength. That’s transformation in

2:35motion. So, if you’re watching this and

2:37you’re on your own day three, keep

2:39going.
