Slept Bad. Sugar Said Otherwise

Five and a half hours’ sleep. I braced for the day to fall apart.

It didn’t. Energy held all day. No crash, no fog until the evening, and that worried me more than if I had crashed. Because I couldn’t explain it.

I’ve been tracking sleep, glucose, energy and mood against NHS blood tests going back to 2012 for a while now, and this was the week the numbers stopped matching the story I thought I knew.

The Belief I Walked In With

Bad sleep wrecks you. That’s the received wisdom, and it’s everywhere. Four or five hours a night and you’re foggy, you’re reaching for the biscuit tin by 3pm, your blood sugar’s all over the place. GPs say it. Sleep apps say it. I’d have said it myself, if you’d asked me the week before this happened.

And it makes complete sense on the surface. Sleep and blood sugar are genuinely linked. A King’s College London study, part of the ZOE PREDICT programme, tracked over 3,600 people and found shorter sleep went hand in hand with higher average glucose and more time spent above 5.6 mmol/L. That’s real-world data, not a lab experiment. The link is not made up.

So when day eleven brought 5.5 hours’ sleep, I expected the crash. I’d earned it, by every rule I thought I understood.

What Actually Happened

Day eleven: 5.5 hours, up early, a soaking walk in the rain. Steady all day. A bit of fog by evening, not nothing, but no afternoon collapse, no reaching for anything I shouldn’t.

Day twelve: sleep down again to 4.5 hours, second rough night running. Held together again. Fog arrived earlier in the day this time, but still no crash.

Two nights of genuinely bad sleep, and my body more or less shrugged.

I didn’t spot the pattern myself, if I’m honest. I’d gone through the tracked data week by week with Claude, laying it all out, and that’s when it actually got pointed out to me. Once it was in front of me, obvious. Before that, I hadn’t connected it at all.

Because two and a half weeks later, same kind of reset, different week. One evening. Cake, chocolate, wine. The sort of evening that just happens, nothing dramatic in the moment.

Six days. Six days before sleep and clarity came back to where they’d been.

Same person. Same tracker. Same data going back to 2012 behind it. Two completely different kinds of “bad night” produced two completely different recovery times, and I’d been treating them as the same category of mistake in my head.

They’re not.

Why Nobody Told Me This

This isn’t in most sleep advice, and it isn’t because anyone’s hiding it. It’s just that “sleep affects blood sugar” is a simpler headline than “sleep debt and food-quality debt behave completely differently, and most advice lumps them together.” The guidelines cover the sleep-glucose link well. They don’t tend to separate out what happens when the two collide with a genuinely rough night on the food and drink side.

Here’s the mechanism, best I can work out. Christopher McDougall’s image is the one that properly clicked for me: glycogen, the carbohydrate stored in your muscles and liver, is a puddle. Maybe ninety minutes of hard effort in it. Body fat, even on someone lean, is the Pacific Ocean. Something like 160,000 calories sat there on tap.

The question was never whether the fuel’s there. It’s whether the body knows how to reach it.

Two nights of bad sleep, running on a fairly tight eating window, glycogen already low. I was drawing from the Pacific. There was fuel to fall back on, so the body just coped. That’s metabolic flexibility. Not immunity to bad sleep, but a buffer.

The sugar and wine night is a different mechanism entirely. That’s not a sleep problem, it’s a glycogen-and-insulin problem: refilling the puddle fast, spiking insulin, and from what I can find, disrupting sleep architecture and gut function in a way that doesn’t reset overnight.

What This Actually Means

I’m not saying sleep doesn’t matter. The ZOE PREDICT data is solid, and I felt the fog both days, even if I didn’t feel the crash. What I’m saying is I’d been treating “bad night” and “bad choice” as the same kind of debt, and they’re not.

Sleep debt, in my case, seemed to be short-term and forgivable, buffered by whatever metabolic flexibility I’d built up. Food-quality debt was slower to clear by a factor of days, not hours.

I can’t say this is how it works for everyone. One person, one tracker, my own data behind it. But it’s changed how I think about a rough week.

What I’d Do Differently

Stop lumping the two together as the same mistake. A rough night’s sleep and a heavy night out aren’t the same category of “off the rails,” even though they can feel like it the next morning.

If you’re already tracking your own numbers, or dealing with a health challenge and working with your GP on it, it might be worth asking: does a bad night actually move your numbers, or is it what tends to follow a bad night, the extra coffee, the easy takeaway, that’s doing the damage? Different problem, different fix.

If you’re not tracking anything yet, just noticing some weeks feel off and you can’t quite say why, that’s worth being curious about rather than worried about. One bad night wrecking your whole day every time is one pattern. An occasional big night out leaving you feeling wrong for most of a week afterwards is a different one entirely. Not a diagnosis. Just something worth paying attention to.

I don’t beat myself up over the sugar-and-wine nights anymore. They still happen. Life’s too short otherwise. But now I’ve got a rough idea what they actually cost.
