What Happens When You Sleep Through Your Eating Window
Day 37 of The Rhythm Reset. I fell asleep at lunchtime. For two hours. Right in the middle of my four-hour eating window.
This wasn’t a planned nap. This wasn’t strategic rest. This was my body saying “we’re done” and shutting down whether I liked it or not.
I’d been fighting a 48-hour bug. Woke up exhausted. Thought I could push through like I always did. By midday, sat down for lunch, and that was it — lights out for two hours.
When I woke up, half my eating window was gone. The old me would’ve spiralled. Called it a failure. Scrapped the day entirely. But five weeks into this rhythm? I did something different.
The Old Response vs The New Response
Old Neil: Window’s ruined. Day’s ruined. Might as well start fresh tomorrow. (Translation: abandon the system when it’s inconvenient.)
New Neil: Extend the window from four hours to five and a half. Eat what I’d planned. Keep the rhythm going.
Not perfect. Not even close. But still on track.
That’s the shift. When life disrupts your window — and it will — you don’t abandon the system. You adapt it.
The system serves you. You don’t serve the system.
What Actually Happened (The Data)
Weight at halfway checkpoint: 13 stone 5 and a quarter pounds.
Total loss in 5 weeks: 6 and an eighth pounds (just over a pound a week).
Calories: 1,257 (pork taco bowl, red pepper soup, Finn Crisps with pâté, one small bag of crisps).
Plant varieties: 29 (serious gut garden work, even on an exhausted day).
10% Rule applied: That bag of crisps? Still counts. The rule isn’t “eat perfectly or fail.” It’s “eat mostly real food and allow up to 10% flexibility.”
Here’s what matters: 99 weeks tracked, 4 stone 8 and three quarters lost long-term. Despite every “mistake” I’ve documented along the way.
This isn’t about perfection. It’s about rhythm.
Why Rhythm Beats Restriction Every Single Time
Restriction says: “Follow the plan exactly or you’ve failed.”
Rhythm says: “Life happened. Adjust the plan. Keep moving.”
When I fell asleep during my eating window, I didn’t panic. I extended it. Kept the plants in. Stayed in the rhythm.
That’s metabolic flexibility in real life. Your body learns to adapt. Your mind learns to adapt. The system flexes with you.
If I’d scrapped the day, I’d have reinforced the old pattern: “If it’s not perfect, it doesn’t count.” That’s the thinking that kept me stuck for years.
Instead, I reinforced the new pattern: “Adapt, adjust, keep going.” That’s the thinking that’s taken 4 and a half stone off and kept me off all medication since February 2024.
Rhythm beats restriction. Every single time.
🎯 Key Takeaways
- When life disrupts your window, extend it — don’t abandon it. Flexibility is part of the system, not a failure of it.
- 1 pound a week adds up. Over 5 weeks, that’s 6+ pounds. Over 99 weeks, that’s nearly 5 stone. Slow works.
- Metabolic flexibility means adapting, not perfecting. Your body learns to switch fuel sources. Your mind learns to switch strategies.

Day 37. Fell asleep at lunchtime. For two hours. Right in the middle of my eating window.
Its an eating-window day. This is the halfway weight checkpoint after the fast — 13 stone 5 and a quarter.
Woke up this morning still exhausted. From this I am assuming 48 Hour bug that I have had. Thought I could push through. By midday, my body had other plans.
Sat down for lunch. Next thing I know, it’s two hours later and my eating window’s half gone.
The old me would’ve panicked. Scrapped the day. Called it a failure.
Instead? Extended the window from four hours to five and a half. Ate what I’d planned. Kept the rhythm going.
Not perfect. Not even close. But still on track.
1,257 calories. Pork taco bowl, red pepper soup, Finn Crisps with pate. 29 plant varieties — that’s serious gut garden work. One small bag of crisps because the 10% Rule still applies, even on exhausted days.
Five weeks in. Lost 6 and an eighth pounds. That’s just over a pound a week — despite every “mistake” I’ve documented along the way. Long-term? 99 weeks, 4 stone 8 and three quarters gone.
Here’s what I’m learning: rhythm beats restriction every single time.
When life disrupts your window, you don’t abandon the system. You adapt it. Extend the window. Keep the plants in. Stay in the rhythm.
That’s metabolic flexibility in real life.
