Day 08 Fasting: Choosing Needs Over Wants

When Running on Empty Meets Real-World Temptation

Day eight hit differently.

Not because the numbers changed dramatically. Not because I had some profound breakthrough. But because I found myself standing at a barbecue, absolutely drained, surrounded by kebabs, burgers, sausages, gorgeous salad, and cakes that looked divine.

And I didn’t eat.

Weight this morning: 13 stone 10. Down another pound. Total loss since December 2023: 4 stone 4 pounds. That’s one stone three pounds in eight days.

But those numbers aren’t what mattered today. What mattered was recognizing the difference between wanting to join the fun and genuinely needing to eat.

The Physical Reality

Let’s be honest about where I was physically.

Absolutely drained. Even a gentle walk felt like a mini marathon. My back grumbled on and off. Sleep was broken but decent enough. Hunger was manageable.

My body was working hard behind the scenes. That’s what happens on day eight of a fast. The fat-burning machinery is running full tilt. Energy isn’t coming from food. It’s coming from stored fuel.

And that takes effort.

Mood stayed solid. Emotionally, a bit delicate around the edges. But getting outside helped keep things steady.

The Barbecue Test

This was probably my biggest temptation so far.

The holy trinity: kebabs, burgers, sausages. Salad that looked genuinely beautiful. And cakes. Lots of them.

In days gone by, I’d have grabbed a plate. Joined right in. Made merry.

Not today.

Today, I recognized what was happening. I wasn’t hungry. I wanted to be part of the social moment. And that’s different.

The old me might have called it a day. But I’ve been building a different muscle. The muscle that chooses what I need over what I simply want.

It wasn’t easy. But it was the right call.

The Win Nobody Sees

Here’s the thing about day eight.

There were no fireworks. No big revelation. No dramatic shift.

And that was the win.

Sometimes progress isn’t about the big moments. It’s about the quiet decision to keep going when everything in your environment is pulling the other way.

That barbecue wasn’t testing my willpower. It was testing whether I could tell the difference between real hunger and social conditioning.

I passed.

The Gut Health Check

Quick practical note: everything’s been A1 the whole way through this fast.

Digestion solid. No issues. No discomfort. That’s not always the case with extended fasting, so I’m genuinely pleased about that.

It’s a reminder that when you’re not constantly asking your gut to process food, it gets a break. And sometimes that break is exactly what it needs.

Want vs. Need

If you’re following along or doing your own fast, this is the message.

When it’s tough, check in. Really check in.

Is it a want or is it a need?

If your body genuinely needs something, listen to it. That’s not weakness. That’s wisdom.

But if it’s just a want—a moment, a craving, a social pull—you’re stronger than that.

You can carry on.

The Bigger Picture

This isn’t about weight. It’s about building lasting, real health.

It’s about choosing yourself each day, even when it’s hard. Especially when it’s hard.

Day eight was tough. My body was running on empty. The temptation was real. And I kept going.

That’s the muscle I’m building. Not the one that says “yes” to everything. The one that knows the difference.

🎯 Key Takeaways

  • Want ≠ Need — Social temptation isn’t the same as genuine hunger
  • No fireworks can be the win — Sometimes progress is quiet discipline, not big moments
  • Physical exhaustion is normal — Day 8 of fasting means your body’s working hard on stored fuel
  • Weight stayed on track — 13 stone 10, down 1 pound, 1 stone 3 pounds in 8 days
  • The muscle you’re building — Choosing what you need over what you want strengthens over time

0:01Hello. Welcome to day eight of my health

0:03and fasting journey. If you’ve been

0:05following along, you’ll know I always

0:07keep it honest. And today has truly put

0:10me through my paces. Physically, I’ve

0:12been running on empty, absolutely

0:14drained. Even a gentle walk felt like

0:17mini marathon. And my my back’s been

0:21having a little grumble on and off.

0:23Hunger was manageable. And while my

0:25sleep was broken, at least I got a

0:27decent amount of it. So body’s working

0:30hard behind the scenes. Moodwise, stay

0:32pretty solid. Emotionally a little

0:34delicate around the edges, but having a

0:36pollen day outside of fasting really

0:38helped keep things steady.

0:41Now, I won’t sugarcoat it. Today was

0:43much, much harder than usual. I found

0:46myself at a barbecue surrounded by the

0:48holy trinity of kebabs, burgers,

0:50sausages, a gorgeous looking salad, and

0:53just to really test me cakes, lots of it

0:56that look divine.

0:58In days gone by, I’d have grabbed a

1:01plate, joined right in. But not today.

1:04Today, I just kept on keeping on, head

1:08down, focused on the bigger picture.

1:12That barbecue was probably my biggest

1:14temptation so far. The old me, as I

1:18mentioned, might have called it a day

1:21and made merry,

1:23but I recognized the difference between

1:26true hunger and just wanting to join the

1:28fun. It wasn’t easy, but that’s the

1:31muscle I’m building. Choosing what I

1:33need over what I simply want.

1:37On the numbers front, weighed in at 1310

1:40this morning. Another pound down,

1:41bringing me to one stone, three pounds

1:44in eight days and four stone and4 pounds

1:49since I started all this back in

1:50December 23.

1:55Those numbers mean something. Um,

1:58but today what mattered most was

2:01actually the mind shift change.

2:04Today there were no fireworks.

2:08That was probably the major win of all

2:10things.

2:12Sometimes I guess it’s important to just

2:14admit today was tough

2:17and in there somewhere I hope there’s

2:19some progress.

2:23Message to me in coming days and weeks

2:26and to anyone else on this journey when

2:29it’s tough really check in.

2:33Is it a want or is it a need? If your

2:36body genuinely needs something, listen

2:39to it.

2:41But if it’s just a want, you’re stronger

2:43than that. You can carry on.

2:49Quick gut check. Everything’s literally

2:51been A1 the whole way through this fast.

2:53So, very pleased about that.

2:58Just remember, this isn’t about weight.

3:01It’s about building lasting real health

3:03and choosing yourself each day, even

3:07when it’s hard.

3:09Keep going.

3:12You’re doing way more than weight loss.

3:16You’re changing the story.

3:19We’ll see you tomorrow, day nine.
