You wake up at 3am. No alarm. No reason. Brain going. You are not anxious, not in pain — you just cannot get back to sleep. And then the next day the cravings arrive. Not normal hunger. Something specific. Crisps. Chocolate. Whatever is nearest. And somewhere underneath all of it, a belly that will not shift no matter how well you have been eating.
I used to treat those three things as three separate problems. Turned out they are the same mechanism wearing three different faces.
I tracked my sleep against my hunger and craving data for ten weeks during the 70-Day Rhythm Reset. The pattern was hard to argue with. And once I understood the cortisol connection, the belly piece finally made sense too.
The Pattern I Kept Seeing in My Own Data
Let me tell you what I was actually experiencing.
I would be asleep — proper asleep, no particular reason to wake — and somewhere between 2 and 4am I would just surface. Not bolt upright. Not anxious. Lying there with my eyes open and a brain that had, apparently, decided the night was over. Wide awake for an hour. Sometimes longer. Then eventually drift off again. Then the alarm.

Six hours sleep. Broken — wide awake for roughly an hour in the middle of the night. For context, during an extended fast at that point I would normally be sleeping reasonably well. The unusual thing was not the total hours. It was the waking. Just surfacing. No reason. Lying there.
I noted at the time: adrenaline and cortisol adapting. Body adjusting. I was not alarmed by it. What I did not do — not yet — was pull the thread to see where it led.

Four hours sleep. Four nights running. Hospital appointment that got cancelled. Walked three and a half hours to kill the time. Came home exhausted. And then — full tub of millionaire shortbread. Two thousand calories. Gone.

Most people know cortisol as a stress hormone. And it is. But it is also a fat-storage signal. Specifically around the abdomen. Cortisol tells the body: we are in a threat state. What I Did About It (And What I Have Not Done Yet)
The moment it properly landed was not dramatic.
I was lying awake at 3am — funnily enough — filming this video series. Not anxious, not in pain, just awake. Brain going over things. Work things mostly. And I thought: this is the exact experience I have been tracking. This is it happening. And instead of fighting it or spiralling, I just noted it. This is the nervous system. In my case it was consistent, not occasional. If I were looking at my own numbers and seeing that reliably, I would want to ask: what is cortisol doing overnight? And what is blood sugar doing between 2 and 4am?
Those two questions reframe the whole thing.
The early warning signal I want to mention carefully: if you have been waking in the night regularly, for no obvious reason, and the days after are harder to manage than they should be — more craving, more tiredness, a belly that does not respond to what you are doing with food — it might be worth thinking about the cortisol piece. Not as a cosmetic problem. As a nervous system signal.
The pattern in my data started years before anything became clinical. Cortisol elevation, blood sugar instability, disrupted sleep — this tends to develop slowly. Bodies start doing this long before a GP has a name for it. The 3am wake is often the first readable signal.
This is N=1. My cortisol, my blood sugar, my nervous system. In my case the connection was clear. I cannot say it would look identical for everyone.
