Cholesterol Isn’t the Criminal — It’s the Firefighter

The GP Said I’d Need Them for Life

Eight years on statins. Total cholesterol stuck at 6.2 millimoles per litre. Medicated every single day.

My GP said what most GPs say: “High cholesterol runs in your family. You’ll need these for life.”

But here’s what happened when I stopped. February 2024. Bloods checked closely. I started 18:6 fasting, switched to non-UPF eating, cut seed oils completely. Real food only. Focused hard on gut health — fermented foods, fibre, thirty plants a week.

Spring 2025 blood test. Twenty months later. GP looked at the screen. Paused. “Whatever you’re doing, keep doing it.”

Cholesterol stable. Unmedicated. But here’s what mattered more — CRP, the inflammation marker, significantly down. From elevated to optimal.

Eight years of pills didn’t fix it. Twenty months of real food did.

What the Blood Tests Actually Showed

Total cholesterol stayed roughly the same. Around 6.2 millimoles per litre on statins. Around the same off them.

The difference? CRP dropped. C-reactive protein measures systemic inflammation. Mine was elevated for years despite medication. Now? Optimal range.

That’s when I realised: cholesterol isn’t the villain. Inflammation is.

Statins lower cholesterol numbers. They don’t fix oxidation. They don’t reduce inflammation in everyone. They mask the symptom. Ignore the cause.

The Thing About Oxidised LDL

Here’s what I learned digging into the research. Cholesterol itself isn’t dangerous. Oxidised LDL — damaged cholesterol particles — drives plaque formation.

Think of cholesterol like a delivery van. It carries fats around your body. Perfectly safe. Until it gets oxidised — damaged by inflammation, poor diet, stress. That’s when it becomes a problem.

A 2018 review in the European Heart Journal found inflammation drives heart disease, not cholesterol alone. Cholesterol shows up where there’s damage. It’s trying to repair the problem.

Statins lower the delivery vans. But if you’re still damaging them — seed oils, ultra-processed food, chronic stress — you haven’t fixed anything.

I fixed the damage. Non-UPF eating. Gut health. Fasting. The inflammation dropped. The oxidation stopped. Cholesterol stayed stable without medication.

The Firefighter Analogy

Used to think cholesterol was like a criminal. Needed locking up with statins. Turns out cholesterol’s the firefighter.

Shows up where there’s a fire — inflammation. Arresting the firefighter doesn’t put out the fire.

You see firefighters at a burning building. You don’t blame the firefighters for the fire. You put out the fire. Same with cholesterol.

My fire was inflammation. Seed oils. Ultra-processed food. Poor gut health. Fix the fire. Not the firefighter.

Twenty months later, I showed my GP the numbers. Cholesterol stable. CRP down. No medication.

🎯 Key Takeaways

  • Cholesterol isn’t the problem — inflammation is — CRP (inflammation marker) matters more than total cholesterol alone
  • Oxidised LDL drives plaque, not cholesterol itself — Fix the oxidation (non-UPF food, gut health, fasting), not just the number
  • Statins mask symptoms, not causes — Twenty months of real food fixed what eight years of medication couldn’t

Here’s the thing: cholesterol isn’t the villain. Inflammation is. Oxidised LDL — damaged cholesterol particles — drives plaque formation. Statins lower cholesterol but don’t fix oxidation. They mask the symptom. Ignore the cause.

I had lipid panels done and kept every result. Cholesterol stable. CRP dropped. That’s what matters. And a 2018 review in the European Heart Journal found inflammation drives heart disease, not cholesterol alone.

Used to think cholesterol was like a criminal. Needed locking up with statins. Turns out cholesterol’s the firefighter. Shows up where there’s a fire — inflammation. Arresting the firefighter doesn’t put out the fire.
