Always Hungry? Not Anymore: The Metabolic Fuel Switch

The Day I Stopped Being Controlled by Hunger

Day 21. Three weeks into The Rhythm Reset. I woke at 7:20, walked 6,000 steps by 8:20, and ate my first meal five hours later.

That would’ve been impossible on Boxing Day 2023.

Back then, I was hungry every two hours. Snack drawer. Biscuit tin. Something to stop the gnawing. I thought that was just how my body worked. Turned out I’d trained it to panic whenever food wasn’t immediately available.

This morning was different. Thirteen hours fasted. Full energy. No hunger panic. That’s what metabolic flexibility actually feels like.

What Actually Happened on Day 21

Eating day today. Window opened at quarter past twelve, closed by quarter to four. Three-and-a-half-hour eating window. Seven hours’ sleep. Straight eights across the board for energy and mood.

Half-seven this morning — autumn sky all pink and gold through the bare branches. Completely serene. Nobody about. Just me, the cold air, and my breath visible in the light.

Came back, did 100 weighted squats with the rucksack, then sat with a coffee and thought: this is the unlock. Thirteen hours fasted, genuinely energised, body humming along on stored fuel.

The Meals That Closed the Window

Broke fast at quarter to one with rye crackers and pâté. Then pork loin steak, spinach soup, apple salad. Decent portion of ice cream because life’s short — that’s the 10% Rule in action.

Two-hour break. Closed the window with a handful of nuts and berries, couple more crackers and cheese. Done by quarter to four.

Week 3 complete. Twenty-one days logged, ketones steady, inflammation down. The body’s learning a new rhythm.

What Week 3 Actually Taught Me

Fasting works best when it’s not a punishment. Early morning walk, solid sleep, real food in a tight window. Small upgrades, no drama, body repairs itself.

The metabolic fuel switch isn’t a magic moment. It’s gradual. Day 1, I was ravenous at hour 10. Day 21, I’m calm at hour 13. The difference? My body learned to use what it already has instead of demanding constant top-ups.

Think of it like this: I used to keep my phone plugged in all day, never letting the battery drop below 80%. Now I let it run down, recharge fully, and it holds charge longer. Same principle. Different fuel source.

🎯 Key Takeaways

The 10% Rule matters — Ice cream included, no guilt, sustainable for life

Metabolic flexibility = hunger freedom — 13 hours fasted with full energy, no panic

Tight eating windows work — 3.5 hours (12:15-3:45) gave my body 20.5 hours to repair

Day 22. Stood in front of the mirror this morning — neck tighter, waist visibly smaller. Stepped on the scales: 13 stone 7. Same number I’ve seen for 10 days straight.

Day 22, Its a fasting day, deep into the Rhythm Reset. GKI 5.7 after 24 Hours— steady metabolic state. But the scales? Stuck.

Here’s what nobody tells you about fasting: sometimes your body changes shape before it changes weight. My neck’s tighter. Measurements look better. I can see it in the mirror. But that number? 13 stone 7. Ten days running.

Today’s been interesting my energy has been all over the place by evening for the last couple of days and sleeps been down from my normal but not that much but today :-

By 11:30am, I was done. Exhausted. Six hours sleep felt solid when I woke up, but my body’s telling me it wasn’t enough. And I’m hungry. Properly hungry. Not the “oh, I could eat” hunger I am Looking forward to food tomorrow, that’s for sure. Sometimes the truth is: I just hate fasting.

On a more positive note

Here’s the thing: inflammation masks fat loss. Water retention after exertion, cortisol from poor sleep, glycogen refill after eating days — all of it adds temporary weight. The scales lie in the short term. The mirror doesn’t.

This is why I track more than weight. Skin texture, measurements, energy patterns — they tell the real story when the scales plateau. The lesson? Trust the process when the data stalls. Your body’s rebuilding, not stuck.

One action: if you’re plateaued, add one non-scale measure this week. Waist measurement, progress photo, or how your clothes fit. Give yourself proof the scales can’t steal.

Day 22. Stuck at 13 stone 7, but not stuck at all. See you tomorrow.
