“Bloody Hell”: What My GP Said After 100 Fasting Days and New Bloods

Over 100 fasting days in two years. My GP looked at my spring 2024 bloods—cholesterol down, liver enzymes normalised, inflammatory markers dropped—and said, “Bloody hell, what’ve you been doing?”

Not starvation. Fasting. There’s a difference that matters.

I started at 18 stone. Today I’m 13 stone 7. That’s 4.5 stone lost in 18 months, muscle maintained, and loose skin that tightened naturally over months 12–18. My fasting glucose dropped from 5.8 mmol/L to 4.9 mmol/L within three weeks. No more 3pm crashes. Energy steadier than when I was eating six times daily.

Here’s what actually happened—and how I got there.

I Used to Eat Every Three Hours

Most people hear “fasting” and think starvation with a fancy name. Unhealthy. Extreme. Your body cannibalising itself.

I thought the same.

Used to eat every three to four hours to “keep my metabolism going.” Breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner, snack. Six meals daily. Constantly thinking about food. Weight climbed to 18 stone.

Boxing Day 2023, I’d had enough. Stopped eating and thought I’d better learn what fasting is actually about.

That first fast? 10 days water only. A week later, 17 days water only. Extreme? Yes. But it forced me to understand what was happening inside my body.

Then I found a better, more manageable way.

What the Research Suggests (And What I Noticed)

Research suggests time-restricted eating allows your body to switch fuel sources—from glucose to stored fat (WMTWL-0156).

Think of it like your body’s got two fuel tanks. One’s the glove box—quick-access cash (glycogen). The other’s the savings account that never gets touched (stored fat). Most people top up the glove box six times a day. The savings account stays locked.

Fasting is how you finally access it.

I noticed exactly that. Week three, my fasting glucose dropped from 5.8 mmol/L to 4.9 mmol/L. Energy steadied out. No more afternoon crashes.

Coming up on two years now. I don’t think about food outside my eating window anymore. That’s not hunger suppression. That’s what I call food neutrality.

Fasting Was the First Domino

Fasting became my baseline rhythm, but it wasn’t the only change. It was part of a broader system:

  • Sleep improved — 7 hours nightly now
  • Walking daily — 6–8k steps
  • Fermented foods for gut health
  • Breathwork for stress

Fasting wasn’t a magic fix. It was the first domino that made everything else easier.

Some weeks, I do 20:4 instead of 16:8. Occasionally, a 48-hour water fast when I feel ready. The rhythm flexes. The principle stays the same.

What My GP Actually Said

Spring 2024, I went in for bloods. My GP reviewed the results:

  • Cholesterol down
  • Liver enzymes normalised
  • Inflammatory markers dropped

He looked at the numbers and said, “Bloody hell, what’ve you been doing?”

That wasn’t a warning. That was genuine surprise at numbers moving in the right direction.

How to Start (If You’re Curious)

You don’t need to jump into 17-day fasts. Here’s how I’d suggest easing in:

Week 1: Start with 12:12. Eat 7am to 7pm. Nothing fancy—just stop eating after dinner.

Week 2: Push to 14:10. Eat 8am to 6pm.

Week 4: Try 16:8. Noon to 8pm.

Let your body learn the route. You’re not starving. You’re teaching it metabolic flexibility—what I call becoming fuel fluent.

🎯 Key Takeaways

  • Fasting isn’t starvation — It’s teaching your body to access stored fat instead of constantly topping up glycogen.
  • Start slow — 12:12 → 14:10 → 16:8. Let your body adapt over weeks, not days.
  • Track what matters — My fasting glucose, not just scale weight, showed the shift was working.
  • It’s part of a system — Fasting was my first domino; sleep, movement, and gut health followed.

“Over 100 Fasting Days in Two Years. My GP Looked at My Bloods and Said ‘Bloody Hell.'”

Over 100 fasting days in the past two years. Not starving—fasting. And yes, there’s a difference that matters.

Coming up on two years now. 13 stone 7 today, down from 18 stone. 4.5 stone lost in 18 months. Muscle maintained. Loose skin tightened naturally over months 12–18. Energy—in my experience—higher than when I was eating six times daily.
I don’t think about food outside my eating window anymore. That’s not hunger suppression. That’s what I call food neutrality.
