The Day 2 Paradox
Day 2 is where things get interesting. Physically, I’m doing all right. Slept well. No new symptoms. But hunger? That’s shown up for work today.
It’s 11pm as I write this, and those pangs have been persistent most of the day. Not unbearable, just… present. The kind that makes itself known every couple of hours, especially as evening rolls in.
On the emotional front, I’ve been levelheaded all day. No mood swings. Just calm, steady energy. And honestly, that stability is half the battle on these journeys. When your head’s clear, you can ride out the physical discomfort.
But let me be straight: the food cravings popped up frequently today. They made things harder than I’d like. Still, I stuck with the fast. No exercise today either — just focused on consistency, letting my body do its metabolic work.
What the Numbers Say
Hopped on the scales this morning: 14 stone 8¾. That’s a 4¼ pound drop from Day 1.
Before you get excited — it’s all water. Classic early water weight loss. Your body burns through glycogen stores first, and each gram of glycogen holds about 3-4 grams of water. When the glycogen goes, the water follows.
Still, it’s a clear sign the body’s getting into gear.
But here’s where it gets more interesting. I checked my glucose and ketones:
- Glucose: 75 (mg/dL)
- Ketones: 2.0 (mmol/L)
- GKI (Glucose Ketone Index): 2.1
That GKI reading means I’m well into therapeutic ketosis. For context, a GKI below 3 indicates your body’s primarily running on fat for fuel. At 2.1, I’m firmly in that zone.
Things are definitely moving in the right direction.
The Mental Game: Distraction vs. Willpower
Here’s what I’ve learned about hunger on Day 2: willpower alone won’t cut it.
When your stomach’s rumbling, the best strategy is distraction. Get busy. Change your scene. Do something that requires focus.
I’m not talking about “white-knuckling” through the hunger. I’m talking about recognising that early fasting hunger is often habitual, not physiological. Your body’s used to eating at certain times. It sends hunger signals on autopilot.
Every time you choose a positive distraction over giving in, you’re rewiring those old habits. You’re teaching your body a new rhythm.
The early days of fasting are often the hardest for hunger. But each day you stick with it, the signals weaken. By Day 3 or 4, hunger typically drops off as ketones rise further.
The Bigger Picture
It’s about so much more than the number on the scales.
Yes, I’ve dropped 4¼ pounds. Yes, my GKI shows I’m in ketosis. But the real win today is emotional stability. No mood swings. No irritability. Just calm, consistent energy.
That’s what metabolic flexibility looks like. When your body can switch fuel sources efficiently, your energy doesn’t crash. Your mood doesn’t tank. You stay level.
The hunger’s there, but it’s manageable. And each time I ride it out, I’m building metabolic muscle — training my body to access fat stores more easily in future.
That’s the long game. Not just weight loss. Metabolic health. Energy. Clarity.
Be kind to yourself. Keep your eye on the bigger picture. You’re not just fasting. You’re teaching your body a new way to function.
🎯 Key Takeaways
Emotional stability matters — Calm, steady energy means metabolic flexibility is working
Day 2 hunger is real — Persistent, frequent, especially in the evening
Water weight drops first — 4¼ pounds in one day is all glycogen and water
GKI 2.1 confirms ketosis — Body’s switched to fat-burning mode
Distraction beats willpower — Get busy when hunger hits; rewire habits actively

Header Day 02 Fasting
Sub Ketosis Kicks In, Hunger Too
0:01
Hi, it’s uh day two of my journey and
0:04
honestly, it’s been a real mix of wins
0:06
and a few um honest challenges.
0:09
Physically, I’ve been feeling all right
0:10
most of the day. Got a good night’s
0:12
sleep. Um and there haven’t been any new
0:14
nasty symptoms cropping up, which is
0:16
always good. Um the main thing I noticed
0:18
was hunger making itself known pretty
0:21
frequently, especially as the evening
0:23
wore on. Um, it’s now coming on through
0:25
11:00 in the evening and those pangs
0:29
have been persistent
0:31
most of the day, but otherwise no major
0:34
issues. On the emotion emotional front,
0:37
I’ve felt levelheaded and steady all
0:38
day. Um, no big mood swings, just calm,
0:41
consistent energy. Um, to be fair, that
0:45
kind of stability is honestly half the
0:47
battle on these sort of journeys and I’m
0:49
grateful for it.
0:53
What made it tough today was the food
0:55
cravings popping of poffen. They
0:56
definitely made things harder than I’d
0:58
like, but I managed to stick with the
0:59
fast. No exercise today,
1:01
which is a shame. Um, just focused on
1:04
keeping consistent, letting my body do
1:05
its thing. Challenges, nothing mild
1:07
really, just that steady knowing hunger.
1:10
Um,
1:13
I did hop on the scales this morning.
1:14
Saw 14 stone, uh, 8 and 3/4. So
1:19
four 4 and a4 pound uh drop in the first
1:23
day which is obviously all water. Um so
1:26
classic early water loss classic water
1:29
weight loss early on. Still clear signs
1:32
my body’s getting into gear. No big
1:33
changes in how I’m feeling or behaving
1:35
just yet. Uh but I did check my glucose
1:38
and ketones. Glucose at 75, ketones at
1:40
two, which gives me a GKI of 2.1. That
1:43
means I’m well into ketosis. So things
1:45
are definitely moving in the right
1:46
direction.
1:48
Um
1:50
my advice for anyone doing this is if
1:52
your stomach’s rumbling uh try to get
1:54
busy and distract yourself. Sometimes a
1:56
bit of action um or a change of scene is
1:59
the best way to ride it out.
2:03
Tip and I know this early days of
2:05
fasting was the um often the hardest for
2:08
hunger. Uh but every time you choose a
2:11
positive distraction over giving in,
2:13
you’re rewiring those old habits. So be
2:16
kind to yourself and keep an eye on the
2:18
bigger picture. It’s um
2:21
about so much more than number on the
2:23
scales.
2:24
Um
2:26
I’ll see you tomorrow onto day three.
