What Is Fat Oxidation?

Fat loss and fat oxidation get used like they’re the same thing. They’re not quite. One’s a number on a scale over weeks. The other’s a process happening, or not happening, minute to minute, depending on what state your metabolism’s actually in.

The Savings Account

Fat stores are the savings account, built up gradually, rarely touched day to day. Glycogen is the current account, small, easy access, used constantly. Fat oxidation is the process of actually making a withdrawal from savings, converting stored fat into usable energy. It mostly doesn’t happen while the current account’s still got funds in it and insulin’s up. It kicks in properly once glycogen runs low and insulin drops, the point where the body has no choice but to start drawing down the reserve rather than living off the current account alone.

Fat oxidation is the metabolic process of breaking down fatty acids to produce usable energy. It increases when insulin is low and glucose availability drops, typically during fasting, extended periods without food, or lower-carbohydrate eating. Regular movement, particularly at a lower, sustained intensity, also increases the body’s reliance on fat as fuel over time, improving how efficiently it can access and use stored fat.

Research on substrate utilisation shows fat oxidation rates rise measurably during fasting states and lower-carbohydrate eating patterns, with training status and metabolic health both influencing how efficiently the switch happens.
