The GP Conversation Checklist

What I wish I’d written down before walking into my GP’s office. The exact questions, in the exact order, whether you’re questioning a medication, thinking about coming off one, or raising fasting and diet changes for the first time.

Here’s What’s Actually Inside

Not a script to read off a phone screen. Not a list of demands. A one-page checklist that gets you and your GP looking at the same information, in an appointment that’s usually seven minutes long.

IF YOU’RE ALREADY MEDICATED

Questioning Something You’ve Been Prescribed

Statins, gout medication, blood pressure tablets — you’re taking something and you’re not sure it’s still the right call, or you want to understand what it’s actually doing before you keep taking it. Most people go into that conversation with a vague feeling and come out with nothing written down. This checklist gives you the specific questions to ask instead.

IF YOU’RE THINKING FURTHER AHEAD

Considering Coming Off a Medication

I stopped six medications in February 2024, on my own initiative, and told my GP afterwards once the blood tests backed it up. That’s not the approach I’d recommend. This checklist is the conversation I should have had first, the one I should have had before I made the decision, rather than after it.

IF NOTHING’S BEEN DIAGNOSED YET

Raising Fasting or Diet Changes for the First Time

You’re not on anything, nothing’s wrong on paper, but you want to try fasting or change how you eat and you’d rather your GP knew than found out at the next blood test. Same checklist. Different questions ticked.

WHY I BUILT IT THIS WAY

I Didn’t Ask First. I Should Have.

Boxing Day 2023, six medications, and I made every change myself before my GP knew anything about it. Statins, gout tablets, asthma inhalers, allergy medication — I stopped the lot, then brought in the blood tests once I had something to show him.

He wasn’t thrilled. But the numbers backed it up, and NHS records going back to 2012 meant he could see the trend, not just one reading. That’s the only reason it worked out. Most people don’t have data going back to 2012 sitting behind them.

This checklist is the conversation I’d have had first, if I’d known what to ask. It’s built from the questions that actually matter to a GP working a seven-minute slot, not a list I imagined would sound thorough.
