What Is Insulin?

I used to think insulin was a diabetes word, something that only mattered if you were already on injections. Turns out it’s running in the background of everyone’s day, every single meal, whether you’ve heard of it or not.

The Bouncer

Picture insulin as the bouncer outside a packed pub on a Friday night. Blood sugar’s the queue. Insulin goes down the line knocking on doors, mostly muscle and fat cells, saying let this lot in, we’ve got custom. Door opens, glucose goes in, the queue clears, blood sugar drops back down. That’s insulin working exactly as designed. It’s not the enemy. It’s doing its job. The problem only starts when the bouncer has to knock on the same doors over and over, all day, because the doors have stopped opening on the first knock.

Insulin is released by the pancreas in response to rising blood glucose, mainly after eating. It signals muscle, fat, and liver cells to take glucose out of the bloodstream, either to use as immediate fuel or to store. It also tells fat cells to hold on to what they’ve already got, which is why insulin and fat release are, in effect, on opposite sides of the same switch. Frequent eating, especially of foods that spike blood sugar fast, means frequent insulin release. Fasting windows and non-UPF food both give the system longer stretches where insulin can sit low.

NHS guidance describes insulin’s role in regulating blood glucose as central to metabolic health, with elevated fasting insulin an early marker doctors look for before blood sugar itself becomes a problem.
