February 2024. I stopped all six of my medications. Statins I’d been on for eleven years. Ezetimibe, three years. Allopurinol for gout, twenty years. Two asthma inhalers I’d had since 1978. And an antihistamine I’d taken daily for decades. I stopped all of them. And then I waited to see what would break.
Nothing broke.
My cholesterol didn’t spike. The gout didn’t come back. I didn’t have a single asthma attack. And fifteen months later, my GP looked at my blood results and said they were the best readings in records going back to 2012s. That’s not what I was told would happen. In this post I want to show you the full arc of data, explain the mechanism that made sense of it, and be honest about the parts that didn’t go smoothly.
The Belief That Kept Me on Six Medications for Over a Decade
The assumption that held me in place for years sounds completely reasonable. It goes like this: if you’re on long-term medication, coming off it is inherently dangerous. The medication is keeping you stable. Take it away and things collapse.
That model assumes the medication is fixing something. In my case, what it was doing was holding back a symptom while the underlying condition quietly worsened.
My cholesterol was 7.5 when I started statins eleven years before I stopped them. When I stopped, it was 8.0. The medication that was prescribed to lower it had presided over a 6.7% worsening. My HbA1c, meanwhile, had been creeping steadily toward diabetic range despite me following the standard dietary advice. My gout was still requiring prescription-strength management after twenty years. Stable and improving turned out to be two very different things.
I’m not saying medication is the wrong choice for everyone. I’m saying that for me, the evidence inside my own blood test record was telling a story that individual appointments weren’t surfacing.
What the Science Was Actually Saying About Cholesterol
Tim Spector has been researching the relationship between diet, gut health, and systemic health for decades. His ZOE research pulls from one of the largest nutritional datasets in the world. On statins specifically, the research suggests their main benefit doesn’t actually come from lowering cholesterol. It comes from their anti-inflammatory action on blood vessel walls.
The cholesterol-lowering part, which is what they’re prescribed for, may have been a red herring all along. A 2014 analysis of 21 observational studies covering 347,000 people found no association between saturated fat in the diet and subsequent heart disease or stroke. (EXP 07822)
I want to be clear about what that does and doesn’t mean. It doesn’t mean cholesterol doesn’t matter. It means total cholesterol as a single number is a much cruder tool than it’s been treated as.
Think of LDL cholesterol as a delivery driver that keeps dropping parcels at the wrong address, specifically inside your arterial walls where they accumulate and cause problems. HDL is the returns driver. It picks up the misdelivered parcels and takes them back to the liver where they can be processed properly. You want fewer wrong-address deliveries and more returns. That’s the simplified version of why the LDL-to-HDL ratio matters more than total cholesterol on its own. (ANA-181)
My total cholesterol was 8.0 in December 2023. That’s the number that looked alarming on paper. But my HDL was sitting at 1.3. That’s the number that should have been getting more attention.
Which brings me to what I think is the most important number in my entire data going back to 2012set. Not LDL. Not total cholesterol. CRP. C-Reactive Protein. The inflammation marker.
Another large US study, thirty years of data, found inflammation twice as important as cholesterol for predicting long-term health outcomes. Twice. (EXP 00756)
Think about that in relation to a standard GP appointment. Cholesterol: checked every time. CRP: often not even on the form.
The Inflammation Thread Nobody Joined Up
This is where the story got interesting for me. Not scary. Interesting.
Gout. Asthma. Allergic response. Cardiovascular risk. Metabolic dysfunction. I’d been handed five separate diagnoses with five separate prescriptions. What the appointments never had time to explore was whether those five problems might share a common thread.
Inflammation isn’t the problem in isolation. Inflammation without an off-switch is the problem. Your body is supposed to fire the response, deal with whatever’s wrong, and then send the resolution signals to shut it back down. Think of a lorry on a motorway with failed brakes. The engine started just fine, doing what it was supposed to do. But the brakes failed. The damage isn’t from starting. It’s from not being able to stop. Conditions like gout, asthma, allergic response, and cardiovascular dysfunction often aren’t problems of too much inflammation. They’re problems of resolution failure. (ANA-150)
Now consider what I’d been eating for most of my adult life, and the decades of disrupted sleep and metabolic stress running underneath all of it. Eric Rimm at Harvard put together data from studies following people across decades. His finding: making genuine lifestyle changes in your 40s or 50s can roughly halve your risk of heart disease, even after decades of doing the wrong things. (EXP 02754)
Think of an old car that’s been running on the cheapest, dirtiest petrol for thirty years. It doesn’t break down on day one, or year one, or even year ten. The engine keeps going. But something’s quietly wearing away, the seals, the valves, the fuel lines. And one day it just stops. Not dramatically. A heart attack at 58 that looked like it came from nowhere. It didn’t come from nowhere. It came from thirty years of the wrong fuel. The car that gets clean fuel from the start might run another hundred thousand miles on the same engine. (ANA-151)
Three Phases: What the Blood Data Actually Showed
I can see in hindsight that my fourteen months of results fell into three distinct phases. I didn’t spot the pattern at the time. It only became visible when I laid the tests side by side. (WMTWL-MOM-250)
Month one: relief.
February 2024. One month after stopping all medication, with my GP’s knowledge and monthly tests scheduled: total cholesterol 7.0. Down from 8.0 while I was on statins. I checked the printout twice. LDL improving. Kidney function excellent. (WMTWL-MOM-246)
The number that surprised me most was ALT, my liver enzyme. It dropped from 69 to 28 in thirty days. The normal range is under 40. I’d been above that range while on statins, and one month of 18:6 fasting, giving my liver a rest from processing medication every day, dropped it by 59%. (WMTWL-MOM-241)
Month eleven: reversal.
January 2025. HbA1c: 40 mmol/mol. Normal range. In December 2023 it had been 46, solidly pre-diabetic. I’d spent years watching that number creep upward despite being on medication, despite doing what I was told. Eleven months off all medication, eleven months of consistent 18:6 fasting and non-UPF eating, and it had reversed. Not managed. Reversed. (WMTWL-MOM-259)
Month fourteen: optimisation.
April 2025. HbA1c 37 mmol/mol. The lowest reading in my data going back to 2012set. LDL: 3.8, down from 5.6 off-medication baseline. Cholesterol/HDL ratio: 4.7, within target for the first time in years.
And then the CRP number. January 2025, CRP was 6.2, technically in the normal range but sitting in the upper half. April 2025: 1.0. An 84% reduction in three months. (WMTWL-MOM-262)
Six medications. All of them for conditions with inflammation somewhere in their story. And the marker that measures systemic inflammation had dropped to near-zero without a single drug.
The Honest Parts: What Didn’t Go Smoothly
I want to be straight about the things that didn’t follow the script.
Around month eleven, my ferritin was dropping. Iron levels declining. I assumed it was the fasting, the reduced food volume. Partly true, it turned out. But the actual cause, once my GP investigated properly, was bleeding piles. Chronic blood loss over months. Nothing to do with the eating window at all. Got treated, problem addressed, levels recovering. That’s what proper monitoring looks like. Not assuming. Investigating. (WMTWL-MOM-316)
The other honest thing: my triglycerides at month fourteen were 4.3, elevated. They’d been 2.3 at month one. I don’t have a clean explanation for that yet. Possibly the timing relative to recent extended fasting. Possibly dietary composition. Possibly lab variation. I’m tracking it. One abnormal marker doesn’t erase the trajectory, but it also doesn’t get ignored. That’s the deal you make when you choose data over assumption.
And the gout. Twenty years on allopurinol, told my uric acid would always need managing. First summer off the medication, I ate a large ribeye at a client dinner and went home fully expecting the ankle to blow up. Woke up fine. Three days later, still fine. (WMTWL-MOM-249)
Not because red meat had magically stopped affecting uric acid. When you fix insulin resistance and gut inflammation, the body regulates uric acid differently. The trigger food wasn’t the problem. The system the food was landing in was the problem. Fix the system, and the trigger stops triggering.
What I’d Actually Do Differently
If I were starting from scratch, the first thing I’d have done earlier is ask my GP for a CRP test.
Standard blood panel: cholesterol, HbA1c, liver function, kidney function. CRP is often not on the standard request. If Spector is right that inflammation is twice as important as cholesterol for long-term health outcomes, it seems reasonable to know where yours sits. Ask for it at your next review. If it’s above 3 mg/L, that’s a conversation worth having, not about cholesterol, about inflammation.
The second thing: look at the direction of your numbers over years, not individual readings. My cholesterol wasn’t just elevated. It was consistently worsening on medication that was supposed to be controlling it. My HbA1c was creeping upward, slowly but clearly. The trend was telling a story that individual appointments weren’t surfacing. If you’ve had multiple blood tests over years, ask your GP to print the history. The trajectory matters more than any single reading.
Practically: 18:6 fasting. Eight-hour eating window. Consistently for eight weeks before expecting to see anything meaningful in blood markers. The timeline I’d set is this. Month one you’re looking for liver and kidney comfort. Month three you run your first blood test. Month six you look for a direction. Month eleven, if the direction has held, is when you start to see metabolic state changes.

A Note on Where the Guidelines Are
The guidelines weren’t written by people trying to harm anyone. Most GPs simply don’t have time to go into this level of detail in a ten-minute appointment. The research on inflammation and cardiovascular risk, on the LDL-to-HDL ratio, on CRP as a predictor, has been building for years. It just hasn’t filtered into what appears on the standard blood request form yet.
“I want to fix this without being on tablets for the rest of my life.” I’ve heard that from a lot of people who’ve found this channel. I said something very like it myself. I’m not saying it’s achievable for everyone. I’m saying the data suggests the body has more capacity to regulate its own systems than most of us have been told, when you change what you’re asking it to work with.
April 2025. GP appointment. He opened the file, looked at the numbers. LDL down 32% from when I first came off statins. HbA1c at 37. CRP at 1.0. ALT at its lowest on record. He paused. “Are you back on statins?” I shook my head. He scrolled through it all again. “This is better than when you were on medication. Whatever you’re doing, keep doing it.” (WMTWL-MOM-243)
I’ve been off all six medications for twenty-one months. I haven’t restarted a single one.
