The Number That Changed Everything
Forty-six years. That’s how long I used an asthma inhaler every single morning. Two puffs. Clear the lungs. Move on with the day. It was as automatic as brushing my teeth.
Since April 2024? I’ve only needed it twice. Not twice a week. Not twice a month. Twice in 18 months.
Both times for the same specific trigger: babysitting Alan, my stepdaughter’s long-haired Dachshund. Once when my respiratory system was already compromised by flu. Otherwise? Nothing. No daily use. No “just in case” puffs. No automatic reach for the inhaler.
Eighteen months of fixing the system. Twice for genuine triggers. That’s it.
46 Years of Daily Medication
I started using inhalers in 1978. Every morning without fail. The routine never changed. Wake up. Inhaler. Breathe. Start the day.
I never questioned it. Asthma was something you managed, not something you fixed. The inhaler controlled symptoms. That was the deal.
For over four decades, that was my normal.
The Two Exceptions
Occasion one: Babysitting Alan for multiple days. Being in close proximity to a long-haired dog. Breathing issues started. I used the inhaler. Genuine trigger.
Occasion two: Same dog, plus flu. My respiratory system was already compromised. The dog hair tipped me over the edge. Used the inhaler again.
Otherwise? Completely clear. No symptoms. No medication. No daily dependency.
What Actually Changed
Here’s what shifted between April 2024 and now:
Time-restricted eating. I wasn’t grazing all day. My body got extended breaks from digestion.
85%+ whole foods. No ultra-processed rubbish. Real ingredients. Minimal packaging.
Weight loss. From 18 stone down to roughly 13 stone 3 pounds (252 lbs → 185 lbs). Less systemic inflammation. Less strain on everything.
Microbiome repair. Gut health improved. Inflammation markers dropped. Immune system calmed down.
The asthma symptoms? 95% gone. The inhaler’s still there. Out of date, actually – I haven’t bothered chasing a new one. But I keep it for genuine triggers only, not daily symptom management.
And the last time Alan stayed? No problems at all.
From Managing Symptoms to Healing the System
Think of your inhaler like a fire extinguisher. For 46 years, I was using it daily – putting out small fires constantly. House alarm going off every morning. Spray foam. Reset. Repeat.
But the house wasn’t on fire. The wiring was faulty.
Fixed the wiring – gut health, inflammation, fasting, real food – and the alarm stopped going off. Fire extinguisher’s still there. Used it twice when there was actual smoke. But the daily false alarms? Gone.
The inhaler managed symptoms. Fixing the inputs healed the system.
