When Your Brain Lies to You About Being Fine
Wide awake at half four. Mind racing. Felt brilliant, actually — ready to take on the world.
That’s the trap.
Day 58 of my Rhythm Reset, and I’d just had my second bad night in a row. Four and a half hours sleep. But here’s the strange bit: I woke up feeling sharp. Ideas flowing. Energy high. My brain was convinced I was fine.
I’ve been here before. I know what’s coming.
The False Peak of Sleep Deprivation
There’s this weird thing that happens when you’re sleep-deprived and your brain hasn’t caught up yet. You wake at 4:30am, eyes wide open, mind already making plans. You feel sharp. Focused. Productive.
But it’s borrowed energy. By lunch, I was reaching for a siesta. By 3pm, the fog rolled in.
Energy, mood, mental clarity — all sixes today. Not terrible. But not the sevens I get after a proper night.
Two bad nights doesn’t double the problem. It compounds it.
Sleep debt’s like that. You don’t just lose hours. You lose the quality of everything else.
How I Think About Sleep Debt
Your body’s a phone. Full charge is eight hours sleep. I’d been running at 30% battery for two days straight.
Phone still works. Apps still open. But by 3pm, you’re hunting for a charger. That’s where I was.
My four-hour eating window looked fine on paper: rye crackers with pâté, red pepper soup, basa amok with coconut rice. Fourteen plants. Just over twelve hundred calories. Body got what it needed.
But without proper sleep? Everything runs on low battery — fasting, food choices, energy, mood, the lot.
Sleep Isn’t One Pillar. It’s the Master Switch.
Sleep isn’t one pillar of seven in the WMTWL system. It’s the foundation. Get it wrong, and every other pillar suffers.
Fasting feels harder. Food choices slip. Energy crashes. Mood drops. Even your hunger hormones get confused.
Two nights of poor sleep taught me this again: borrowed energy always comes due.
One action for tonight: in bed before eleven. Non-negotiable. Time to recharge properly.
🎯 Key Takeaways
- False energy after poor sleep is a trap — Your brain lies to you before the crash hits
- Sleep debt compounds — Two bad nights doesn’t double the problem, it multiplies it
- Sleep is the master switch — Get it wrong and all seven pillars suffer (fasting, food, energy, mood)

Second bad night in a row. Four and a half hours. And here’s what two bad nights back-to-back actually look like.
