The Morning I Expected a Reward (And Got a Lesson Instead)
Day 27. Nine hours sleep. Quality rest, four-hour eating window the day before, all the boxes ticked.
I stepped on the scale expecting it to move. It didn’t.
13 stone 8 and a half. Third day static. Same number, different morning, growing frustration.
Here’s the thing nobody tells you about fasting rhythms: your body doesn’t run on a spreadsheet. It operates on metabolic memory. And when you’ve had a few sugar blips during the week — nothing dramatic, just enough to muddy the water — that memory lingers longer than the taste.
This is what Day 27 taught me about patience, patterns, and the gap between expectation and reality.
The Deflation Hit Different This Time
I’m not talking panic. I’m talking deflation.
Static weight after doing everything right feels like showing up for an exam you’ve revised for and getting marked absent. You know the work’s there. The scale just hasn’t caught up yet.
Two hours after weighing in, the brain fog rolled in. Heady. Tired. Like I’d eaten a loaf of white bread for breakfast.
That’s when it clicked: sugar doesn’t just affect the day you eat it. It creates ripples. Insulin spikes linger. Water retention hangs around. Your body holds onto glycogen stores for 2-3 days after carb-heavy meals.
The scale wasn’t ignoring my effort. It was processing last week’s decisions.
The 28kg Revelation
I strapped on 28 kilos for my lunges and squats today. That’s my old peak weight — 18 stone.
My body used to carry that load all day, every day. Upstairs. Downstairs. Walking to the shop. Sitting at my desk.
Now it’s just a workout. And after 100 lunges, I can take it off.
That’s progress the scale doesn’t show. That’s capacity regained. That’s what metabolic health actually looks like when you stop obsessing over a single number.
What I Actually Ate (And Why It Matters)
Total intake: 1,654 calories
Plants: 38 varieties
Fibre: 34 grams
Carbs: 198 grams (high for me)
Sugar: 47 grams
Big salad for lunch. Green veg soup. Thai curry. All whole food. Every plant counted.
On paper, this is textbook WMTWL eating. But context matters.
Carbs were elevated. Sugar was higher than my usual baseline. And while none of it was ultra-processed rubbish, it was enough to shift my metabolic state away from fat-burning and back toward glucose dependency.
That’s not failure. That’s feedback.
Recalibrating the Mood Scale
Here’s the other thing I figured out today: I’ve been inflating my mood scores.
I’ve been logging 7s and 8s when I should’ve been scoring 5s. Average exists for a reason. It gives you room to recognise what great actually feels like.
If every day is a 7, then 7 becomes the floor. And when you hit an actual bad day, you’ve got nowhere to go but negative numbers.
So I’m resetting. A 5 is fine. A 5 is functional, productive, no complaints. A 7 is genuinely good energy and clarity. An 8 is exceptional.
This isn’t pessimism. It’s precision. And precision helps you spot patterns.
What Metabolic Memory Actually Means
Think of your metabolism like a savings account with a delay on withdrawals.
You eat high-carb meals Monday and Tuesday. Your body stores glycogen, retains water, elevates insulin. That’s the deposit.
But when you fast Wednesday through Friday, the withdrawal doesn’t process immediately. Your body needs time to shift fuel sources, drop insulin, release stored water, and tap into fat.
That delay — that’s metabolic memory. It’s why the scale can stay static for 2-3 days after sugar disruption, even when you’re doing everything right.
The lesson: trust the process longer than you trust the number.
🎯 Key Takeaways
- Static weight after sugar blips isn’t stalling — it’s metabolic memory processing last week’s decisions (ripples last 2-3 days)
- Your old peak weight as a workout load — perspective shift on progress beyond the scale (capacity regained)
- Recalibrate your baseline — if every day is a 7, you’ve lost the ability to recognise great (precision beats optimism)
