Day 23: When Your Body Wakes You Up Demanding Food
Here’s what’s odd about fasting when you’re fat-adapted: hunger shouldn’t wake you. Normally, I open my eyes and hunger doesn’t arrive for hours. My body knows how to burn stored fat.
But Day 23? Eyes open at 5:15am. Stomach awake before me. Starving.
This was a refeed day after a 44-hour fast. Weight hit 13 stone 6 — the lightest I’ve been since my 21-day fast back in July. But something wasn’t right. The hunger pattern was scrambled. Then I looked at my sleep tracker: five and a half hours. Couldn’t get back down.
By midday, I was shattered. And that’s when I realised: sleep debt compounds faster than you think.
What Actually Happened on Day 23
Broke the fast at half eleven. Inhaled some food. Straight into a three-hour meeting. Nothing else eaten.
By the time I finished, I wanted everything.
Got home at half five. Soup and crackers, done by six. Total eating window: six and a half hours. Managed to hit 31 plants across the day. Not bad for a chaotic refeed.
Macros: 2,000 calories. 81g protein, 175g carbs, 29g fibre. Soup, crackers, pâté, Basa with pak choi. Not perfect numbers, but after 44 hours fasting and a brutal day — I’ll take it.
Weight stayed stable at 13 stone 6. That’s pattern consistency: post-fast refeed, six-hour window. Body resets, inflammation drops, weight follows.
The Sleep Debt Problem No One Talks About
One rough night? You notice. Two or three? Decision-making suffers. Hunger signals scramble. Discipline gets harder.
Sleep debt works like compound interest — except in reverse. You don’t just lose the hours. You lose the ability to regulate hunger hormones properly.
When you’re sleep-deprived, ghrelin (hunger hormone) spikes. Leptin (satiety hormone) drops. Your body starts screaming for quick energy — usually sugar and carbs. Fasting while sleep-deprived feels like fighting with one hand tied.
That 5:15am wake-up wasn’t hunger. It was my body telling me: you’ve borrowed too many hours from sleep. Pay it back.
The Action That Matters
Sleep isn’t optional. Not if you’re fasting. Not if you’re tracking rhythm.
This week, I’m prioritising sleep over everything else. Seven hours minimum. Screen off by 10pm. No negotiations.
If you’re in your own rhythm reset and finding hunger harder to manage — check your sleep first. Before you blame willpower or fasting protocols, ask: am I actually rested?
Because a well-rested body handles fasting differently. Hunger arrives predictably. Energy stays stable. Decision-making sharpens.
Sleep debt scrambles all of it.
🎯 Key Takeaways
Action beats perfection — Prioritise seven hours minimum, screen off by 10pm, non-negotiable this week
Sleep debt compounds faster than you think — One rough night affects hunger signals; multiple nights derail fasting entirely
5.5 hours of sleep scrambled my hunger pattern — Woke at 5:15am starving after a 44-hour fast, when normally hunger doesn’t arrive for hours
