Entire Packet Every Time

I Don’t Eat One Sweet. I Eat the Entire Packet.

Box of chocolates? Not one or two a day spread across the week — I inhale the entire box that day or the next. I am an animal. Can’t do moderation. Never could.

This isn’t new. It’s how I’ve been wired since childhood. Six litres of Coke daily for twenty-five years. One hundred cigarettes a day at peak. Alcohol I rarely touched, but when I did, excess every single time.

All-or-nothing. That’s how I’m built. Food’s no different.

People say: “Just have one biscuit. Practice restraint.” Can’t. Don’t have that switch.

I open a packet of sweets thinking I’ll have two, save the rest for tomorrow. Two becomes four. Four becomes eight. By the end of the night, the packet’s empty — and I didn’t even enjoy half of them. Just ate them because they were there.

Box of chocolates in the cupboard? Same story every time. “I’ll have one after dinner,” I tell myself. Next day, box is gone.

I Spent Years Trying to Learn Moderation. Failed Every Time.

I used to think: “I need to learn moderation. That’s the skill I’m missing.”

Spent years trying. Failed every single time.

Then I realised: I’m not broken. I’m just wired all-or-nothing.

Think of your eating pattern like a light switch. Most people have a dimmer — they can dial it up or down, eat a bit, stop, come back later when they’re hungry again. I’ve got a binary switch. On or off. Eating or not eating. No middle setting.

Trying to install a dimmer when you’ve only got binary wiring? Complete waste of time.

So I stopped trying. I fast instead.

If I’m Fasting, I Cannot Eat Rubbish

Here’s the thing: if I’m fasting, I cannot eat rubbish. Access removed. Problem solved.

Know your wiring. Work with it, not against it.

Six litres of Coke daily for twenty-five years. Quit cold turkey in 2006. Haven’t touched it since.

One hundred cigarettes a day. Quit nineteen years ago. Zero cigarettes since.

Food? Same wiring. Entire packet or nothing.

Eighteen months of fasting this way: 18 stone down to 13 stone 7. Off asthma meds, statins, gout medication, allergy tablets — stopped them all February 2024.

The Research Backs This Up

Alan Aragon’s research shows it: forbidden food mindset drives binge eating. When you tell yourself “I’m never supposed to have this,” that restriction actually underlies the bingeing pattern.

Fasting works for me because it’s binary. Eating window or fasting window. No negotiation.

I know my wiring. I work with it.

I used to believe I needed to learn moderation. Now I know my wiring is all-or-nothing, and there’s nothing wrong with that.

Binary Eating: On or Off

So I use fasting. Binary eating. On or off.

Fasting’s just one part of the system, though — I’ve rebuilt sleep, sorted my microbiome, stopped ultra-processed foods. But the fasting structure? That’s what removed the daily negotiation with food.

Food addiction is real. I’m a food addict. No shame in that. Just honesty.

Work with your wiring, not against it.

If moderation doesn’t work for you, try binary.

🎯 Key Takeaways

  • Know your wiring — Some people have a dimmer switch for eating. Others have binary (on/off). Neither is broken, just different.
  • Work with it, not against it — If moderation fails you repeatedly, stop trying to install a dimmer. Use fasting as your binary structure.
  • Fasting removes the negotiation — When you’re in a fasting window, the decision is already made. No willpower required.
