When the Motorway Wins
Day 13. Saturday. Cheat day. Twenty-three hours without sleep. Five hundred miles driven. And a burger at midnight to fix a sugar crash.
This was not the plan.
The plan was simple: four and a half hour drive to see friends, stay overnight, come back Sunday. Eating window open. Homemade food. Controlled chaos.
The motorways had other ideas. Closures. Diversions. Six and a half hours there instead of four. Then Sunday’s forecast: another six-hour slog home if we stayed. So we made the call: don’t stay over. Drive back tonight. Miss the traffic.
What followed was five hundred miles, a dessert table I couldn’t resist, and a midnight burger from a place I’d normally walk past. Because sometimes your body doesn’t care about your eating window. Sometimes you just need fuel to get home safely.
The Dessert Table (No Regrets)
The party was brilliant. Met lovely people. And there was a dessert table. Homemade. All of them.
I am, as previously confessed, a food monster. I enjoyed all of them. Numerous times.
Fish and chips on the way down — proper chippy, not a drive-through. Real batter, real fish, proper chips. Then the party. Then the homemade desserts. Trifle. Brownies. Cheesecake. All of it.
This is what I mean by the 10% Rule in action. Most of the day was actually reasonably non-UPF. Homemade desserts. Real fish and chips. Whole food chaos, not factory chaos.
But then came the drive back.
Midnight at the Services
Twenty-three hours awake. Sleep-deprived. Struggling to focus. Midnight. Motorway services.
I needed something to keep me going. Really weird sensation — getting a burger to fix a sugar crash.
Not hunger. Not cravings. Just: “I need fuel or I’m a danger on this motorway.”
So I got the burger. Ate it. Drove the rest of the way home. Got back safe.
The Damage Report
Roughly 3,400 calories. 160g protein. 270g carbs. 115g sugar.
Aside from that burger and some chocolate, the day was actually reasonably UPF-free:
- Homemade desserts (real ingredients, just sugar-heavy)
- Real fish and chips (batter, fish, potatoes — not processed)
- Burger + chocolate (the only factory stuff)
Your body doesn’t care about your eating window when you’re running on fumes. Sometimes you just need fuel to get home safely.
The Wagon Doesn’t Leave Without You
Here’s what I’m not doing: beating myself up.
This is life. Motorways shut. Plans collapse. You eat what’s available, you keep yourself safe, and you get back on the wagon tomorrow.
The wagon doesn’t leave without you. It’s still here.
Day 14’s a fast day. Let’s see what that brings.
🎯 Key Takeaways
- Plans collapse — Motorways shut, timelines stretch, sleep disappears
- Eating for safety — Sometimes food is fuel to get home, not pleasure or nutrition
- 10% Rule flexibility — Homemade desserts + real fish and chips = mostly whole food chaos
- No shame, just reality — The wagon doesn’t leave without you
- Day 14 ahead — Fast day coming, back to the Rhythm
